Updates on Royal College Recognition of GIM
Dear Colleagues,
By now you have likely heard that the Royal College Council unanimously approved the application for recognition of General Internal Medicine as the 17th subspecialty of Internal Medicine at their extraordinary meeting on December 17 2010!
This represents the culmination of nearly 30 years of effort by general internists across the country, and we all owe a debt of gratitude to those who have worked long and hard on this issue and in particular
Drs. Brian O'Brien, Sharon Card, Bert Govig, Luc Lanthier, Julia Trahey, Jeff Turnbull, Barry Kassen, Jane Lemaire, Sam Benaroya, Linda Snell, Bill Coke, Mahesh Raju, Phil Wattam, and all of the GIM Program Directors across the country.
On behalf of the CSIM, I would also like to formally thank Drs. Jason Frank, Ken Harris, Richard Reznick, James Wilson, and all of the Royal College staff in the Office of Education who gave so much of their time to help guide the GIM proposal through the Royal College processes.
Finally, I would like to thank all of you who took time out of your busy schedules to write to the Royal College Council on this issue - it made a tremendous difference. I know the Royal College Council representatives were impressed by the tsunami of letters on this issue which arrived in their offices over the past few weeks from all corners of our country, from both academic and community general internists, and from general internists at all stages of their careers (including those still in training). When we work together, we can move mountains!
I wish all members of the CSIM the best of the Holiday Season and look forward to an exciting 2011 for General Internal Medicine and the CSIM.
Dr. Finlay McAlister
President, CSIM
